What Is Casino Cashback and How Is It Calculated?
Casino cashback is a promotion that returns a percentage of your losses over a set period. Lose 200 in a week on a 10% offer, and you might get 20 back. That is the headline. The terms decide the rest.
Cashback is one of the more honest-looking bonuses, because it does not pretend you will win. But it still has small print. This guide shows how it is usually worked out and where the catches hide. It is for adults aged 18 and over.
The basic formula
Most offers follow the same pattern:
Cashback = net losses in the period × cashback percentage, up to a cap.
Net losses usually means what you staked minus what you won, over the qualifying games, within the period. Some operators use deposits minus withdrawals and current balance instead. The two methods can give different answers, so check which one applies.
Worked examples
| Scenario | Net loss | Rate | Cap | Cashback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple week | 200 | 10% | 100 | 20 |
| Bad week, capped | 1,500 | 10% | 100 | 100 |
| Ended in profit | 0 | 10% | 100 | 0 |
| Below minimum loss of 50 | 40 | 10% | 100 | 0 |
Look at the second row. The cap means the refund stops growing long before the losses do. A player who loses 1,500 gets back the same 100 as someone who loses 1,000. Past the cap, every extra loss is unprotected.
The terms that change the value
Cash or bonus money
This is the big one. Some cashback lands as real money you can withdraw straight away. Other offers pay it as bonus funds that must be wagered several times before withdrawal. A 10% refund with a wagering requirement is worth much less than 10% in cash, because you have to put it back into play first.
Qualifying games
Offers often count slots only. Table games, live dealer games or jackpot slots may be excluded. Losses on those games then earn nothing.
The period
Daily, weekly or monthly. A longer period nets wins against losses over more days, which can shrink the figure.
Minimum loss and caps
Small losses may not qualify at all. Large losses hit the ceiling. The useful band sits in between.
Bonus play
Losses made while playing with bonus funds often do not count. Only real-money stakes qualify.
Claiming
Some offers credit automatically. Others need you to opt in, claim within a time limit or contact support. Miss the window and the refund is gone.
How to read an offer in five steps
- Find the rate and the cap. Divide the cap by the rate to see the loss at which the cap kicks in.
- Check whether the payout is cash or bonus funds.
- If it is bonus funds, note the wagering multiple and the time limit.
- List which games count.
- Check how net loss is measured and over what period.
Cashback works very differently from free spins and deposit matches. For a comparison, see our guide to free spins and bonuses on online slots.
Is cashback a good deal?
It lowers the cost of losing. It does not turn losing into winning. If you were going to play anyway, a cash refund with no wagering is a small, real discount.
The trap is the mindset. "I get some back" can make a bigger session feel safer than it is. It is not. Ninety percent of each loss is still a loss on a 10% offer. And cashback offered as part of a VIP tier is designed to keep you active, which is the opposite of what your budget needs.
Some honest questions to ask yourself:
- Would I play this week without the offer?
- Am I staying longer to hit the minimum loss?
- Do I count the refund as money I already have?
If the answer to any of these is yes, the offer is working against you.
A note before you claim
Gambling is for adults only. Promotions, and gambling itself, are regulated differently around the world, and some places ban online casinos outright. Check the rules where you live, and set a budget that assumes no refund at all.
Something to add?
A short note is enough.

- A deposit limit is switched on for this account
- I have checked the licence with the named regulator
- I have read the bonus terms, or I am playing without one
- My phone alarm is set for the time I stop
